From Living Systems to Living Homes: A Respectful Homage to Hayao Miyazaki’s Ecological Imagination

The Ajinomatrix BioSphere Home Design Studio explores a practical question:

Can the home become a small, intelligent, living ecosystem while contributing to preservation? Like Nausicaa's green room for instance?

Through aquaponics, solar autonomy, water loops, plant monitoring, domestic biodiversity, low-energy automation, and sensory observation, AJXBSHDS investigates how everyday living spaces can become more balanced, more responsive, and more respectful of life.

This work is technical. It involves pumps, tanks, sensors, solar panels, data logging, water quality, plant behavior, energy buffers, and design constraints.

But it is also poetic.

A living system cannot be understood only as hardware. A small aquarium, a greenhouse, a fountain, a mushroom terrarium, or a plant-music interface becomes meaningful when it changes how we behave. It asks us to observe, to adjust, to listen, and to care.

For this reason, we wish to recognize, with humility, the influence of Hayao Miyazaki’s ecological imagination on the cultural horizon of AJXBSHDS.

This is not a commercial affiliation, endorsement, or representation involving Studio Ghibli or Miyazaki-sensei. It is a respectful homage to a body of work that has helped many people perceive the natural world as alive with dignity, interdependence, danger, beauty, and consequence.

Miyazaki’s films often refuse the simplistic opposition between nature and technology. Machines can be beautiful, but they can also become destructive when separated from responsibility. Forests can be magical, but they are not sentimental ornaments. Children can understand things that adults have forgotten. Small acts of care can carry civilizational importance.

This is very close to the spirit of Ajinomatrix BioSphere.

Our purpose is not to escape modernity. It is to rebalance it.

A solar-powered aquatic loop is not merely a gadget. It is a lesson in dependence. A smart greenhouse is not only a productivity device. It is a microclimate of responsibility. A domestic BioSphere is not a fantasy of control. It is a training ground for coexistence.
